Fence staining cost in the Upstate is not a single number, and anyone who gives you one over the phone without asking questions is guessing. Style (privacy, picket, shadowbox, horizontal), height, linear footage, wood condition, and whether the fence needs a wash all move the price. Here is how we build a number, so you can sanity-check any quote you get.
How is a fence actually priced?
Start with the math we actually use: length times height times the sides being stained. A 150-foot privacy fence at 6 feet tall, stained on both sides, is 1,800 square feet of surface. Stained on one side, it is 900. That is why two quotes for "the same fence" can be hundreds of dollars apart. One contractor priced both sides and the other priced one. Ask which it is before you compare anything else.
Why is there no per-foot rate?
We do not post a per-foot rate, because it would be wrong for half the fences we see. A short, clean, newer privacy fence with water and power on site is the easy end. Six hundred feet of greyed wood that needs a wash, stained both sides, with no spigot anywhere near it is the hard end. Same town, same company, very different jobs. The only honest number is the one written for your fence.
How much does wood condition matter?
Condition is the swing factor. New wood may have mill glaze, a smooth pressed surface that stain cannot soak into until it is opened up. Greyed wood needs a wash before stain, and wash pricing for aged or greyed wood is part of a real quote, not an add-on we spring on you. If the fence has old paint or a failing solid stain on it, that is a stripping conversation, and it changes the job completely.
Does fence style change the labor?
Style changes the labor more than people expect. A flat privacy fence is the fastest thing we stain. Pickets mean edges, and edges mean time. Shadowbox fences have boards on both sides with gaps between, so you are staining more surface per linear foot and fighting overspray the whole way. Horizontal board fences look great and take careful work around every lap. None of this is a reason not to have the fence you want. It is why "per foot" pricing without a style question is a red flag.
What about access, water, and power?
Access matters. A fence along a flat, open backyard in Duncan is a faster job than the same fence on a slope in Greer, threaded behind a pool, or buried in landscaping. We need water and power for a wash. Tell us if the job site has no power or water. That can change how we quote it. Distance from the shop can play in too. These are the questions a real estimator asks, and they are the questions our form asks for a reason.
Why does the cheapest quote often fail?
The cheapest quote is often the one that skipped prep. Stain on dirty, wet, or mill-glazed wood fails. It peels, blotches, or washes thin in the first year, and then you pay twice: once for the cheap job and once for the fix. A quote that includes a wash and a moisture check will never be the lowest number on the table. It is usually the lowest cost per year of the fence looking right.
On product: we stain with penetrating oil-based products on most Upstate fences because they soak in, move with the wood, and weather instead of peel. Plan on a re-stain cycle of 2 to 6 years depending on the opacity you pick and how much sun the fence takes. Semi-solid hides weathering longer.
